It certainly doesn’t help that Kena’s voice actor still sounds like she just woke up. Kena is a guardian spirit and can interact with the dead, but the game does very little with that premise and does next to nothing to make us care about Kena or her journey. Its goal is to cleanse a mountain shrine that has been corrupted by the area’s former village chief, Toshi.

Kena is introduced at the start of the game, obviously, but we never really get the impression of her as a character. I wouldn’t call her Wrong, but the world and the characters in it are unremarkable and I didn’t care about the story, to be honest. The story in Kena: Bridge of Spirits miss a lot. things safe, with some questionable decisions. Truth be told, it does little that is new or particularly interesting in terms of gameplay, but the high level of quality and compelling world design make it a great time, as long as you don’t mind how well it plays them. Most of its other offerings aren’t quite on the same level, but almost every facet of this game showcases the skill and patience that undoubtedly went into creating it. In fact, it’s probably the most beautiful indie game I’ve ever seen. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a self-published indie game, but it doesn’t look like it or the game.
